At Miller-Motte College, you can train for your Surgical Technology Associate of Applied Science degree in as little as 18 months.

                  Our Surgical Technology program is offered in Cary, NC and serve the surrounding areas of Morrisville, Durham and Apex, NC.

                  This Surgical Technology program is offered through our CampusFlex track. What does this mean for you? You will take your classes on-campus in a traditional group setting and will then complete some of your coursework online.

                  What Surgical Technologist Training Will Teach You

                  If you are ready to become an important member of a surgical team, then you’ll love some of the classes you’ll take in our Surgical Technology program. You will learn about the human body as well as diseases and how to help with surgery.

                  Here are just some of the classes you will take on your way to your new career:

                  • Pharmacology and Anesthesiology: The identification of drugs used in the perioperative setting, their sources, classifications, routes, methods of use, side effects and interactions will be emphasized. Terminology, abbreviations, and calculations relating to pharmaceuticals will be introduced. Skills will be acquired in preparation and management of medications used for the surgical patient. Laws, regulations, scope of practice, and the ethical standards necessary for the administration and dispensing of drugs in the perioperative setting is explained and demonstrated. Topics covered in Anesthesia concepts include methods, agents, and techniques. The application of knowledge of homeostasis includes explanations of anesthesia monitoring devices, preparation, complications, and interventions. 
                  • Pathophysiology: This course provides a general overview of the disease process and the mechanisms by which the human body copes with disease. It provides the learner with an understanding of the essential concepts of various diseases affecting each body system and the mechanisms, progression and treatments for those diseases. The process of hemodynamic disorders, inflammation, and infection are included to provide an understanding of the relationship of all disorders as they relate to surgical intervention. 
                  • Surgical Orientation: This introductory course provides an orientation for students to the history of surgical technology, the surgical team members, hospital management, and the physical aspects of the operating room. Basic patient care concepts and issues concerning ethical, moral, and legal responsibilities are addressed. Classroom instruction and field trips to affiliate hospital facilities introduce students to the surgical technology field.

                  Surgical Technician Career Opportunities

                  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for Surgical Technicians will increase 15% by the year 2024*, which means you’ll be able to put your Associate of Applied Science degree to work when you graduate. When you complete your Surgical Technology program, you will graduate with the education and confidence you need to become a success.

                  Surgical Technologist
                  Surgical Technologists work in the operating room, passing sterilized tools and equipment to the nurses and surgeons as needed. After an operation, you will help to bandage the patients and take them to the recovery room where they will wake up from the anesthetics.

                  As a Surgical Technologist, you will be a vital part of the surgical team. You will help to ensure the patient''s’ recovery by preparing them for the procedure and preparing the room for surgery. You will assist the surgeon and the nurses to make sure everything runs smoothly.

We also offer 100% online programs through our Wilmington location (Business Administration, Criminal Justice, IT Support Specialist and Medical Billing and Coding).
