                  Do you want a career in legal studies? Do you have an eye for detail? Are you a team player? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then training in the field of Paralegal Studies in Charleston, SC could be the perfect jumpstart to your new career!

                  For almost 100 years, Miller-Motte Technical College has provided Paralegal Studies courses. From our beginning in 1916 as a small courtroom stenographer training school, Miller-Motte Technical College has expanded to help students in South Carolina get the training they need to begin or advance their careers. At MMTC, you can now train for a Paralegal Associates of Applied Science Degree in as little 18 months.

                  This is a Hybrid track program. What does this mean for you? You will take most of your coursework online with video, audio and text-based lessons and interactive discussion groups. You’ll then spend a few hours each week at the campus for face-to-face training. It’s the best of both worlds, for your convenience.

                  Plus, our Charleston, SC campus is convenient for students from North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Goose Creek and other nearby South Carolina towns.

                  What You will Learn in Paralegal Classes

                  Our Paralegal Studies program provides students with a combination of in-class instruction, hands-on practice and real world training. Our qualified instructors teach you about various regulations and laws, legal writing and research, and many other important topics and skills.

                  Here are just a few of the classes you’ll take as you work towards a career in Paralegal Studies:

                  Legal Writing: This course introduces students to the development and preparation of common legal documents through practiced researching and frequent writing assignments. Representative documents are created for each student’s professional portfolio.

                  Family Law: In this course, you’ll focus on issues surrounding marriage, divorce and custody within the local jurisdiction. Students will learn basic principles of property distribution, child and spousal support, as well as marriage alternatives.

                  Criminal Procedure: This course proceeds through the criminal justice system from first police contact, searches, interrogations and other investigation, through the prosecution, preliminary proceedings and trial. Problems of federalism, the exclusionary rule and sentencing are discussed. Comprehensive presentation of major issues in criminal process, with emphasis on Supreme Court cases interpreting the Constitution is also addressed.

                  As you reach the end of your Paralegal Studies program, you’ll complete an externship at a local place of business. This will give you excellent hands-on experience as well as something you can put on your resume when pursuing a Paralegal Studies career.                   Career Opportunities in Paralegal Studies

                  After finishing your Paralegal Associate of Applied Science Degree at Miller-Motte Technical College, you will be prepared to pursue many different career options. Here are just a few:

                  • Legal Secretary: Legal Secretaries work at law firms, businesses or government agencies. In this job, you will help research laws and statutes while preparing legal documents such as subpoenas, summonses and others.
                  • Title Examiner: As a Title Examiner, you’ll work closely with real estate and mortgage documentation to summarize records that affect property titles. By researching public and private records, Title Examiners apply both their administrative skills and understanding of the legal system to prepare title companies, law firms, or real estate agencies with critical title documentation.
                  • Paralegal/Legal Assistant: In this job, you’ll support lawyers by conducting legal research and getting legal documents ready. You will use your knowledge of legal software and the U.S. court system to help keep law offices running smoothly.

                  Miller-Motte College has 11 convenient locations and offers Beauty & Wellness, Business, Healthcare, Protective Services, Skilled Trades-CDL and Technology courses and programs. We also offer 100% online programs through our Wilmington location (Business Administration, Criminal Justice, IT Support Specialist and Medical Billing and Coding). All graduates have access to Career Assistance which includes guidance from our Career Services team, resume updates, workshops and more.
