This will include taking an in-depth look at various correctional programming to help rehabilitate the offender, the history behind the U.S. correctional system, and the juvenile correctional system.
                  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health: This course will encompass an understanding of the broad categories of mental illness as well as the commonly abused substances: both pharmaceutical and street drugs. Theories behind the use of such substances and the causes of mental illness, as well as various treatment options for both, will be explored. Finally, the class will address the challenge of working with an offender who has a dual diagnosis.
                  • Ethics and Professionalism in Criminal Justice: This course focuses on ethical considerations that criminal justice professionals are likely to encounter in the field, especially off duty behavior, use of force and authority, profiling, corruption and conflicts of interest. The relationship between personal and public ethics is examined along with critical thinking skills to assist in finding solutions and making decisions.

                  Possible Careers in Criminal Justice

Getting an education is important, but it’s even more important to be able to get a job when you’re done. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 12% growth rate for Security Guards by 2022.* When you graduate with your Associate of Occupational Science Degree in Criminal Justice, you can be sure there will be plenty of career options to choose from including:

                  Correctional Officer and Jailer
Correctional Officers and Jailers help keep both prisoners safe and the public safe when prisoners are moving between the courtroom and prison. You’ll oversee people who have been accused of crimes as well as people who have already been convicted.

                  Court Clerk
As a Court Clerk, you’ll ensure that courtroom proceedings are completed efficiently and accurately. You’ll work closely with attorneys and witnesses, preparing them for court, preparing court dockets, recording court proceedings and making sure they know when to be in court.

                  Security Guard
Security guards are an important part of preventing crime. As a Security Guard, you’ll watch people and buildings and familiarize yourself with routine procedures so that you’re aware of any suspicious activity.
