                  Miller-Motte College opened in 1916 as a small training school for courtroom stenographers and since then we’ve provided education to the Fayetteville, Hope Mills, Fort Bragg, Spring Lake, Raeford, Lumberton and Charlotte, North Carolina area for over a century. Today, you can earn your Paralegal Associate of Applied Science Degree in as little as 18 months.

                  Our Paralegal program is a Hybrid track program. What does this mean for you? You will take most of your coursework online with video, audio and text-based lessons and interactive discussion groups. You’ll then spend a few hours each week at the campus for face-to-face training. It’s the best of both worlds, for your convenience.

                  What You’ll Learn in Our Paralegal Program

                  Our Paralegal program is a unique combination of classroom instruction, hands-on learning and real world work experience. In the classroom, you’ll learn about various laws and regulations, legal research and writing and so much more. Our experienced instructors will also teach you practical skills that you’ll need in the field. Below are just a few of the paralegal classes you’ll take as you complete your Paralegal Associate of Applied Science degree:

                  Contract Law—This course is an overview of law of contracts. You’ll examine the formation performance and discharge of legally enforceable agreements at common law and under the Uniform Commercial Code. The Statute of Frauds, breach of contract and damages, third parties and defenses are explored, as well as the essentials of contract drafting.

                  Legal Research—This course introduces students to the process of conducting legal research using electronic and library resources. Primary and secondary sources of law are identified, explained and applied. Students learn how to conduct research on constitutional, statutory and case law, using the IRAC process. Proper citation form and Shepardizing are also discussed and applied.

                  Criminal Law—This course provides an overview of substantive criminal law including crimes against the person, crimes against property and crimes against public order and morality. The course identifies and analyzes common defenses to crimes. Mens rea, actus reus and concurrence are also discussed.

                  Toward the end of your Paralegal program, you’ll complete an externship at a local business. This externship will not only give you the opportunity to get hands-on practical training, it will also provide you with the work experience many employers are looking for in new hires.

                  Career Opportunities in Paralegal

                  When you earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree by completing the Paralegal program at Miller-Motte College Fayetteville, NC, you’ll be able to pursue a variety of careers. A few are listed below:

                  • Legal Secretary: Legal Secretaries help research laws and statutes and prepare legal documents like summonses, subpoenas and more. As a legal secretary, you may work in a law firm, government agency or business.
                  • Title Examiner: As a Title Examiner, you’ll work closely with real estate and mortgage documentation to summarize records that affect property titles. By researching public and private records, Title Examiners apply both their administrative skills and understanding of the legal system to prepare title companies, law firms, or real estate agencies with critical title documentation.
                  • Paralegal or Legal Assistant: Paralegals support lawyers by conducting legal research and preparing legal documents. Using their knowledge of the U.S. court system and legal software, Paralegals keep law offices running smoothly and are an important part of a legal team.

                  Miller-Motte College has 11 convenient locations and offers Beauty & Wellness, Business, Healthcare, Protective Services, Skilled Trades-CDL and Technology courses and programs. We also offer 100% online programs through our Wilmington location (Business Administration, Criminal Justice, IT Support Specialist and Medical Billing and Coding). All graduates have access to Career Assistance which includes guidance from our Career Services team, resume updates, workshops and more.
