                  Classes in Surgical Technologist Training

We at Miller-Motte College employ instructors who provide excellent Surgical Technologist training. We believe the key to career success lies in combining traditional classroom learning with opportunities to practice skills in real-world environments. Here are a few of the courses you will take as a student in our Surgical Technology program:

                  • Surgical Clinical Practicum I & II: In this two-part course, students work in the scrub role on minor cases at a state-approved healthcare facility under the supervision of a preceptor. Students will demonstrate knowledge and refine skills in preparation for the surgical practicum exam. There is no remuneration for practicum experiences.
                  • Surgical Orientation: This course teaches students the history of surgical technology and educates them on the duties of surgical team members and hospital management. We also emphasize concepts and issues of basic patient care, especially regarding legal, moral and ethical responsibilities in the medical field. In addition to classroom instruction, students will visit affiliated hospital facilities to learn and observe.
                  • Surgical Techniques: This class furthers students’ knowledge of anesthesia and surgical pharmacology. Students also learn more about medications and anesthetics, legal policies and responsibilities, patient care and drug calculations. We emphasize preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative case planning and implementation, including wounds, tissue handling, suturing devices and the care of specimens.

For additional information on the courses we offer in our Surgical Technology program, download our Course Catalog.

Your Future as a Surgical Technologist

With all of the changes to the health care system, the country needs medical professionals more than ever. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that demand for Surgical Technologists will grow 30% by the year 2022, making our Surgical Technology program a smart educational choice. After completing your Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology program, you can become a Surgical Technologist.

As a Surgical Technologist, you’ll work with surgeons, nurses and technicians during operations to ensure that surgeries go the way they’re supposed to. You’ll locate, sterilize and organize the necessary equipment to prepare the operating room before surgeries. During surgeries, you’ll provide the surgeons and nurses with the tools they need, collect samples and transport them to the laboratory. You’ll also help apply bandages to patients and transfer them to the recovery room after operations are completed.
