A Surgical Technologist is a healthcare professional who assists in surgeries by preparing the operating room, arranging surgical instruments, and ensuring the surgical team has the necessary tools during the procedure. Surgical technologists work closely with surgeons, nurses, and other medical staff so that surgeries run smoothly and safely.

A Surgical Technologist performs a variety of duties before, during, and after surgical procedures include, but not limited to:

  • Preparing the operating room by sterilizing equipment and confirming the appropriate surgical instruments are available.
  • Maintaining a sterile field throughout the operation to prevent infections.
  • Assisting with post-operative procedures, such as cleaning and dressing the surgical site.

A Surgical Technologist primarily prepares the surgical area, handles instruments, and assists during surgery by maintaining a sterile field and passing tools to the surgeon. A Surgical Assistant, on the other hand, typically has more direct involvement in surgery and may assist the surgeon with actual procedures, such as making incisions or suturing.

The job outlook for Surgical Technologists is promising, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projecting a nationwide 6% growth in employment between 2023 and 2033 nationwide.
