Plumbing is a trade built on precision, technical systems, and problem-solving under pressure. If that sounds familiar, it should. Veterans bring those skills in on day one. MMC’s Plumbing program can be completed in as little as 10 months, and GI Bill® benefits are accepted for eligible veterans.
GI Bill Ⓡ is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More information about education benefits offered by VA is available at the official U.S. government website at http://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill.
Why The Plumbing Industry Is a Strong Career Move for Veterans in North Carolina
North Carolina relies heavily on pipe-related construction trades—employing helpers for these jobs at more than twice the national average rate. This reflects strong local activity in residential building, commercial development, or municipal infrastructure expansion.
How Military Skills Line Up With Plumbing Work
If you spent time in the military reading technical manuals, maintaining equipment, or working in safety-critical environments, you have already practiced the core skills plumbing-related work demands. The table below shows exactly where they line up.
| Military Competency | Plumbing Parallel |
| Reading technical schematics | Reading plumbing diagrams and blueprints |
| Operating within safety-critical environments | Working to plumbing codes and safety regulations |
| Equipment maintenance and repair | Valve, fixture, and system repair |
| Following sequential procedures | Installation and repair step sequences |
| Problem-solving under pressure | Diagnosing and resolving system failures |
| Physical work in demanding conditions | Fieldwork in residential and commercial settings |
No prior plumbing experience is needed to enroll in Miller-Motte College’s Plumbing program. The curriculum is built for students starting from the beginning.
Using GI Bill® Benefits for a GI Bill Trade School Plumbing Program
MMC is approved by applicable State Approving Agencies to accept military education benefits. For veterans using the Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33), tuition is paid directly to MMC on the veteran’s behalf. Depending on eligibility, out-of-pocket costs may be significantly reduced or eliminated entirely.
GI Bill® Programs Veterans May Qualify For
The table below outlines the most common options that veterans may qualify for.
| Benefit Program | Key Eligibility Note | Payment Structure |
| Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Ch. 33) | Based on length of active duty service after Sept. 10, 2001 | Tuition paid directly to the school |
| Montgomery GI Bill® – Active Duty (Ch. 30) | Up to 36 months of benefits; must be used within 10 years of release | Monthly installments paid to the recipient |
| Montgomery GI Bill® – Selected Reserve (Ch. 1606) | Available to members of Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Reserves, and National Guard | Monthly installments paid to the recipient |
| Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance (Ch. 35) | For spouses and dependents of veterans with service-related permanent disability | Monthly installments paid to the recipient |
To explore your benefits and compare options across schools, use the VA’s GI Bill® Comparison Tool. To apply, visit VA.gov. MMC’s Financial Aid team can help veterans work through the options, confirm eligibility, and apply benefits toward enrollment. MMC’s military and veteran resources page has additional information specific to MMC students.
What the MMC Plumbing Program Covers
MMC’s Plumbing program can be completed in as little as 10 months. Rolling enrollment starts every five weeks, so veterans don’t have to wait for a semester calendar to get moving. Classes combine theory with hands-on lab training, and the program is designed to build career-readiness through practical experience rather than classroom instruction alone.
Hands-On Skills You’ll Practice
The program’s lab environment is where most of the real learning happens. Students work with the tools and materials they’ll encounter in the field and repeat tasks until competency is established. Safety best practices are reinforced throughout, not treated as a separate module.
Core skills covered in the program include:
- Correctly measuring, cutting, and connecting plastic, copper, and steel piping using the appropriate adhesive, brazing rod, or solder
- Using tools specific to the plumbing trade
- Repairing and installing valves used for water, natural gas, and petroleum gas systems
- Locating building sewers, drains, and fixtures
- Solar heating and hydronic system installation and code requirements
- Applying plumbing codes, particularly as they relate to hydronic piping and solar heating systems
This hands-on approach builds the muscle memory and critical thinking that employers expect from entry-level service technicians.
NCCER Exposure and Industry Credentials
MMC’s Plumbing program curriculum is aligned to National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) competencies at the Core, Level I, and Level II. NCCER, a not-for-profit education foundation developed with support from more than 125 construction industry leaders, sets standardized training and credentialing benchmarks for the construction trades.
Students complete NCCER knowledge-based exams and hands-on competency assessments. Students can earn up to five industry-recognized credentials that do not expire.
While the program does not guarantee NCCER credentials, as credential requirements are controlled by NCCER and not MMC, the training aligns with NCCER standards and can support continued credentialing after graduation.
What to Expect as a Student at MMC
MMC keeps class sizes small so students can get direct access to instructors during both lectures and lab work. Tutoring services are available for students who need additional support, and a student success orientation helps new students adjust to the hybrid program format.
Career services are available to current students and graduates. That includes resume building, mock interviews, access to job fairs, and employer events. Veterans also receive specialized financial aid advising and enrollment support from a team familiar with military benefit programs.
Additional veteran-focused resources, from national organizations like American Corporate Partners (ACP) to VA healthcare and employment tools, are listed on MMC’s military and veteran resources page.
Is Plumbing the Right Move After Military Service?
For veterans considering a career change, plumbing offers a grounded next step: hands-on work, a short path to employment, and a field with demand in NC. The veteran career change to plumbing technician makes sense on paper and in practice, because the discipline and technical instincts built in service carry directly into the trade.
This program may be a strong fit if you:
- Want hands-on work, not a desk job
- Are looking to enter the workforce within a year
- Have GI Bill® benefits available and want to put them toward a skilled trade
- Are ready to build from the ground up in a field with consistent long-term demand

The Plumbing program prepares students for entry-level careers within the plumbing field, such as a service technician. As varying licensing requirements are established by state or outside agencies, this program does not fully prepare students for the plumbing licensing exam or to become a licensed plumber. Students are encouraged to contact their state licensing board for specific requirements.
