The Courses You’ll Take during Medical Clinical Assistant Training

By combining classroom lecture, online learning and hands-on projects and practicums, you can be confident in your training and prepared to start your new career in healthcare when you graduate from Miller-Motte College's Medical Clinical Assistant program. You’ll take a variety of medical and general education courses throughout your Medical Clinical Assistant program. Some courses you’ll take include:

  • Medical Insurance Billing: Students will explain the guidelines of Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), Traditional Insurance, Group Plans, Individual Plans and Government Sponsored Plans. Students will learn about completing CMS1500 Claim Forms and processing and billing insurance claims. Methods of pre-certification, pre-authorization and referrals will also be examined. 
  • Clinical Laboratory: This competency-based course teaches the skills necessary for the performance of selected laboratory procedures. Students will learn phlebotomy techniques, capillary sticks, microscopic examination skills, gram staining procedures, urinalysis testing and various laboratory-testing procedures performed in a physician’s office. Students will practice obtaining samples for testing and learn how to follow up with patients on test results. 
  • Extern and Medical Review: This course provides students with the opportunity to practice administrative and clinical skills in a suitable physician’s office or ambulatory healthcare facility under the supervision of the practicum coordinator and site preceptor Preparation for and review of the information on the national certification exam is included.

You’ll be prepared to take the Medical Assistant Certification exam after graduating from the Medical Clinical Assistant program and upon successful completion can be eligible to be a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA).
