What is a Skilled Trade?
Skilled trades are jobs which require special skills, knowledge, or ability. This information can be learned through college, technical schools, vocational schools, or specialized training programs. Skilled trades give workers the freedom to work in the field using their hands rather than working in an office.
Skilled trades can be found throughout many industries. Generally, skilled trades can be categorized as:
- Industrial Skilled Trades
- Construction Skilled Trades
- Service Skilled Trades
Industrial Skilled Trade workers include welders, mechanics, and heavy equipment operators. Electricians, Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning technicians, and refrigeration technicians would be classified as Construction Skilled Trade workers. Service Skilled Trade workers can include medical assistants, nurses, therapists, and orderlies.

What to Expect from MMC’s Skilled Trades Programs
Our curriculum follows the same approach regardless of which campus you attend. Each program aims to have students ready to apply for entry-level positions in their field upon completion. Students have the opportunity to gain industry experience through job-simulated, hands-on training alongside classroom instruction.
We aim to provide students with quick, yet thorough training and work-related experience to assist in starting their new career.
Electrical Diploma Program
Our Electrical program is designed to help prepare students for entry-level positions working with residential and commercial clients. Students are instructed in electrical safety, theory, and safety procedures as an introduction to the program.
As students progress, they practice handling lighting fixtures, troubleshooting circuits, load calculations, proper grounding techniques, and more. Students also study safe troubleshooting procedures in special or hazardous locations.
In addition, we help students update their resumes and practice interview skills.
Students in our program are exposed to the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) competencies. This exposure allows students to complete levels within their NCCER competencies as they progress through our program.
Students can complete this program and earn their diploma in as little as 10 months.
Combination Welding Diploma Program
Students are instructed in job safety, protective clothing, and proper shop procedures during this program’s introduction. Students are expected to exercise this knowledge as they practice setting up their equipment and maintaining a safe working environment. Welding requires students to work with heated, sharp, and other dangerous materials.
Students can gain experience using common welding practices including shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and plasma arc cutting (PAC). Students may hone their techniques as they practice making V-groove welds for flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead welds. Students may also practice piercing, slotting, squaring, and beveling metals using a plasma cutting machine.
Upon successful completion of our Combination Welding diploma program, students should be prepared for entry-level construction trade positions. Students are exposed to and instructed in welding practices which comply with the American Welding Society’s (AWS) standards.
Our Combination Welding diploma program is recognized by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). Students are exposed to NCCER core competencies throughout our program.
Students can complete this program and earn their diploma in as little as 10 months.
HVAC & Basic Refrigeration Training Diploma Program
Our Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Basic Refrigeration (HVAC/BR) Training diploma program prepares students to service residential and commercial clients. This program emphasizes the importance and use of proper safety protocols when using work tools in the field and classroom.
Students are exposed to electrical theory and circuitry as it relates to heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. They can practice monitoring, measuring, and troubleshooting electrical circuits as they practice wiring and installing HVAC units. They can also practice repairing and maintaining various climate-controlled refrigeration systems.
Students are instructed in the proper ways to recycle and dispose of refrigerant in compliance with EPA’s Section 609 requirements. EPA and Clean Air legislation as it relates to heating systems are also covered during this program.
Students can complete this program and earn their diploma in as little as 10 months.
CDL Training: Class A Tractor Trailer Certificate Program
Our Commercial Truck Driving (CDL) Training: Class A Tractor Trailer certificate program can be completed in 4 weeks.
Students in this program train to inspect and safely operate commercial vehicles and properly handle cargo. Students are exposed to defensive driving and accident prevention techniques. They can also practice verifying their trucks comply with size and weight requirements during vehicle inspections.
Upon successful completion, students should meet FMCSA Entry Level Driving Training requirements. They should also have the skills to sit for their Commercial Driver’s License exam.
Our CDL program is not Title IV Eligible. Graduates from this program must obtain a Commercial Driver License in order to be employed in this field. Miller-Motte College does not guarantee third-party certifications.
